Pure

Create a record of all your research activities, data and outputs to showcase your research work.

Create a record of all your research activities, data and outputs to showcase your research work.

Using Pure will make your work more discoverable to other researchers and institutions, via the Edinburgh Research Explorer.

The system can be used to highlight different aspects of your work as a researcher including:

  • research projects
  • funding
  • datasets
  • outputs such as peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, monographs and conference papers
  • activities like conferences, awards, blogs, public engagement, outreach and editing
  • your work in the media

You can include evidence and links to show where your work has been used.

You - or a designated member of staff working on your behalf - can maintain records relating to your research outputs. Pure will run automated searches of several online sources to find your journal articles and offer you the option to import them into your Pure profile.

Pure connects with data repositories so the research output and the data can be linked. If you use DataShare or DataVault to save your data you'll only need to enter the information once in order to also get a record of it in Pure. You can save your data in an external repository but you'll need to then also add it to your Pure profile.

Pure can hold a wide range of information (or metadata) about a dataset to explain what it is, and the dataset record can be linked to other Pure records for related projects, theses, publications, activities, evidence of impact and other datasets.

You can choose either to make a record public or restrict it to other Edinburgh researchers or just your colleagues.

If you join from another university, and you can export your publications list from their current research information system (Pure or equivalent) as a BibTex or RIS format file, then you can import this into Pure at Edinburgh but any manuscripts or other files will still need to be added manually. Likewise, if you are leaving you can get a copy of the information to take to your new institution. You can also synchronise your Pure profile with your ORCID account and export the content from your Pure profile to your ORCID account if you are leaving.

Pure user accounts are de-activated automatically when you leave and your profile will not be visible on the Edinburgh Research Explorer. Your outputs will remain as a version of the record on the public website.

All postgraduates should have a Pure account for the purposes of depositing theses, but they do have limited functionality.
