Participants got an overview of the research computing landscape at the University of Edinburgh.

Mike Wallis from Research Services gave a great introduction to high-performance computing and referred to the University’s research computing facilities. He provided information on Eddie and shared tips for resource estimation when you submit jobs to the scheduler. All staff and PGRs have access to Eddie using their university credentials. Eddie users are engaging in green computing, with about 65% less power needed to run jobs compared to a standard laptop!

Josephine from EPCC presented the national and regional services ARCHER 2 and CIRRUS, explaining how users can access these services via the different consortia and calls. Upon completion of the driving tests users can gain free allocation for six months. Kostas from EPCC mentioned the DDI and the route to making Edinburgh the data capital of Europe. He outlined the city deal with Edinburgh International Data Facility at its core.

Andrew Horne from EDINA gave an update on the Automated Systematic Reviews project. Researchers who would like to automate any upcoming systematic reviews using AI technology are encouraged to get in touch with Andrew to explore opportunities.

Our next seminar is on 2nd April 2024 and will focus on how to manage, share and present your research. Book your place (in-person) or online now!
