Do you need technical expertise and skills to support your research projects?
Would you like to talk to a team who have experience of working across higher education with a track record of co-developing intuitive, easy to use and innovative solutions with researchers?
EDINA is business unit in Information Services Group (ISG) which works with academics across the University to help develop technology solutions for a range of new ideas and challenges.
EDINA has 20 years’ experience in delivering solutions across the education sector. We have particular expertise in building intuitive services that help non-technical people use digital data and services effectively. As well developing solutions, we build skills and confidence in new users and help advanced users achieve high impact research.
We can help support your projects, be it large research grants or small demonstrators, as well as lend our expertise to any specific research and analysis need you might have.

We benefit from the expertise of our team of software developers, who enable the development of solutions using emerging technologies, like blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) as well as more standard developments, such as apps and databases.
As well as a proven track record of moving new ideas, proof of concepts and prototypes towards maturity, EDINA also has experience of developing project into scalable, income-generating digital solutions.
Through our delivery of national services, we have relationships with and provide services to 120 UK HE institutions, 240 colleges and 3000 primary schools across the UK. Our portfolio includes award-winning geospatial services, crowdsourcing tools, cultural resources, and pioneering mobile apps.
Researchers in all disciplines and at any stage of development - from your initial ideas and challenges through to developing commercially viable software - are encouraged to contact EDINA to discuss how we can support and advance your research activity.
Consultancy Services
Software Development
Our established software engineering team supports the full range of software development lifecycle activities from: user needs analysis and software architecture, through to testing, quality assurance, and production-level deployment.
We can deliver national solutions at scale, as well as collaborate with many research teams on their research projects, providing technical expertise in high quality software development and product management.
Data Management and Preparation
EDINA is expert in the management and presentation of geospatial and other data.
We have decades of experience in the ingest, manipulation and curation of static data (monthly processing of geospatial data; monthly receipt, cleansing and ingest of over 100 bibliographic metadata datasets into an aggregated database), and have grown recent experience of working with and analyzing real time data streams from Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
EDINA Consultancy ServicesExamples of how we can help
EDINA has deep expertise of geospatial data and services to help present data spatially, creating powerful representations of its impact. As well as static data EDINA has experience of working with real time streams of data, from satellites, IoT devices and social media.
Combined with our experience of managing large corpus of data, EDINA is now developing a scalable text and data mining platform, with the potential to consider the approach and thinking about ethics over time by mining all digitised theses, or carry our ‘sentiment’ analysis to capture the feelings expressed in NSS surveys.
EDINA has also worked on projects to empower communities through citizen science: Engaging with individuals in projects that they are impacted by, or issues that are important to them, developing simple interfaces to capture and up load environment data.
Other projects have included geo-referencing assets (heaters, stairs) and internal areas of buildings (rooms, internet connections) to improve building management and awareness of spaces and their accessibility.
The “How green is your campus” project will visualise the change and the potential impact of green roofs, landscape features, living walls, other green and blue infrastructure.
EDINA’s computational notebook service allows the creation and sharing of live code, equations, visualisations and explanatory text. They provide the basis for ‘computational narratives’ or ‘code stories’ with tools and support, for the user whatever their level of skill or knowledge, to deliver narratively rich, coded solutions.
