The Software Sustainability Institute’s Open Call for Projects provides expert advice and consultancy on software development, adoption and use of infrastructure, and development and support of a community of users and developers. Researchers (including PhD students) from any discipline can submit proposals to improve software they are developing, from taking prototypes forward to maintaining a mature product.
Open Call allows you to propose joint software research projects which will allow you to:
- Assess, develop and improve software you currently use
- Ensure long term sustainability of software
Free or paid for:
Free, but you must apply through a competitive process. The Software Sustainability Institute can advise you on the types of projects that meet our criteria.

Success criteria for proposals include:
- Novelty
- High level of impact on the UK research community
- Indications of commitment to the project and of the effort you will put in
- Evidence of increased or enhanced user/developer communities
- Clear alignment with SSI goals
- All relevant information contained in the form
