The Centre for Data, Culture & Society provides our community with upskilling opportunities and space for methodological experimentation and innovation. It also gives tailored advice and support to research groups and projects. There are a variety of ways you can engage with the Centre to develop your digital skills.
Details of everything the centre has to offer and the ways in which you can get involved can be found at the CDCS website.

Training
CDCS aims to grow capacity for data-driven and applied digital research across the disciplines. Our programme is aimed at and taught by researchers in the arts, humanities and social sciences. We offer a wide range of learning opportunities from introductory courses on coding to hands-on classes, and from challenge-led collaborative work to monthly deep-dives into a vast range of digital methods. There are several components to our training offering.
Training programme
Our training programme comprises of a number of different methods of teaching from one off workshops to more in-depth courses. We cover a range of skill levels and a whole host of topics.
Pathways
Our Training Pathways guide beginners through the steps and concepts they need to master new methodologies and signpost related training and support.
Project Support
- Data surgeries - Our Training Fellows are researchers with digital and data skills. They are able to provide you with advice on how to process your data, how to troubleshoot issues or point you towards more information or training.
- Prototyping - We run regular opens calls for projects that are developing digital outputs and need support with prototyping and have held rapid prototyping sandpits that enable researchers to learn from one another.
- Research Technologist - We have a Research Technologist within the CDCS team who provides support to researchers working on digital projects and websites. Get in touch to arrange a meeting to talk through early-stage ideas, troubleshoot or get guidance on ongoing projects.
- Funding - We offer a limited number of bursaries to allow members of staff and PhD students to develop their digital and computational skills by attending workshops, summer schools and other scholarly training events.
Networking and Events
We also run a number of events that give researchers the opportunity to discuss all things digital in a variety of settings. We hold monthly Digital Fikas, where you can meet other people working on data-led projects across the college, and discuss ideas over coffee and cake. Our events include Masterclasses, Project Deep Dives, and Work in Progress Showcases.
