Schedule, Information & Booking Links
1. INFORMATION SESSION - What HPC Services does the University offer? Online via MS Teams, 15:00-16:00 Join IT experts from the College of Science & Engineering and colleagues from Digital Research Services and EPCC for an information session on IT Infrastructure available at the University of Edinburgh. This session aims to present the facilities and support mechanisms available, initiate a dialogue and facilitate the exchange of ideas between IT staff, research leads and service users at the College of Science & Engineering. Speakers: Julien Sindt, Commercial Manager, EPCC Josephine Beech-Brandt, Programme manager, EPCC David Fergusson, Head of Research Services Section, ISG |
2. RESEARCH IN ACTION - How is HPC being used at UoE? Online via MS Teams,15:00-16:00 Discover how the University of Edinburgh Researchers are using HPC. This session will provide you with insights from the members of the UoE research community who will talk about their current projects on HPC. Once we confirm the names of speakers, we will add them here. Speakers: Dr Oliver Brown, Chancellor's Fellow, EPCC Dr Valentina Erastova, Chancellor's Fellow, School of Chemistry Dr Antonio Attili, Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Computational Reactive Flows, Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids |
3. HPC COMMUNITIES & NETWORKING - Relevant Communities to get involved In-Person, Murchison House - Room 1.19, 15:00-16:30 Join colleagues from ‘Women in HPC’, ‘Community of Edinburgh Research Software Engineers’ and ‘Digital Research Services’ in this community building and networking session. Get to know how these communities contribute to the University’s ecosystem and how you can get involved and expand your network. Lightning talks will be followed by coffee/tea and cakes and an opportunity to ask questions in person. Speakers: Eleanor Broadway, Women in HPC - EPCC Chris Halcrow, Community of Edinburgh Research Software Engineers (CERSE) - Center for Discovery Brain Sciences (CDBS) |
4. HANDS-ON TRAINING SESSION - ARCHER2 HPC Carpentry – Part 1 (HPC Shell) In-Person, Ashworth Labs - Lecture Theatre 3, 10:00 - 16:00 This two-day course introduces High Performance Computing (HPC) and how to access remote advanced computing facilities via the command line. The first day will introduce how to use the shell in a HPC context. The second day will cover how to use HPC systems effectively. We will use ARCHER2, the UK's National Supercomputer. Please note that the first day is optional in case you’re already familiar with the shell. Participants must bring a laptop. Presenter: Chris Wood, Project Manager, EPCC |
5. HANDS-ON TRAINING SESSION - ARCHER2 HPC Carpentry – Part 2 (HPC Intro) In-Person, Ashworth Labs - Lecture Theatre 3, 10:00 - 16:00 This two-day course introduces High Performance Computing (HPC) and how to access remote advanced computing facilities via the command line. The first day will introduce how to use the shell in a HPC context. The second day will cover how to use HPC systems effectively. We will use ARCHER2, the UK's National Supercomputer. Please note that the first day is optional in case you’re already familiar with the shell. Participants must bring a laptop. Presenter: Andy Turner, Principal Architect, EPCC |
6. HANDS-ON TRAINING SESSION - How to work on Eddie In-Person, JCMB - 6301, 10:00 to 16:00 This session course is designed for new users of the Eddie cluster which is part of the Edinburgh Compute and Data Facility (ECDF). It gives a description of the hardware and software environment on the compute cluster, and an overview of supporting facilities offered by ECDF. The course introduces the job submission system and general environment on Eddie, parallel programming concepts and shows how one can run a job simultaneously on more than one processor. This course is run on the Eddie compute cluster. Staff, visitors and research postgraduate students have access to Eddie by default. Prerequisites: Eddie is a Linux cluster, so basic Unix skills and familiarity with the command line are required in order to be able to make the most of this course. We strongly recommend attendees with no prior Unix experience complete The Carpentry course before attending: http://swcarpentry.github.io/shell-novice/ Presenter: Mike Wallis, Support Team Lead, Information Service Group |
